An ounce of prevention
With summer in full swing many of the pests that normally live outdoors look to escape the heat by moving to the relative comfort they find inside your home. In the Pacific Northwest, spiders top the list of these unwanted guests including the aggressive house spider (also known as the hobo spider) which is known for the severe symptoms its bites can produce. Follow the tips below to help prevent them from making your home their vacation destination.

spider bite
  • Seal off their points of entry by inspecting door and window casings and screens for closeness of fit. Other areas to inspect include places where water pipes and electrical lines enter your home. Caulk any cracks and other small openings.
  • Inspect firewood for spiders or their egg sacs before bringing it into your home.
  • Keep woodpiles, newspapers and debris away from your house.
  • Trim plants and shrubs to keep them at least 1 - 2 feet away from your siding.
  • Clean off any spider webs that you see.
  • Since spiders feed on insects - eliminate their potential food sources by treating your home's first-floor door and window frames and its foundation. Cascade's preventative maintenance service can take care of this exterior treatment for you.
Your Cascade technician will look for these conditions and notify you as part of your Cascade Inspect and Protect service.
