Warning signs - Wasps In the Pacific Northwest, the wasps to be on the look out for in the late summer and early fall are the “social” wasps including yellow jackets and bald-faced hornets. Their nests are enclosed in paper and can range in size from a softball to a basketball or even larger by the end of the season. These nests can contain hundreds of wasps and they can pack a powerful sting.
To tell if your home is harboring a wasp colony walk your property periodically looking for nests hanging from beneath roof eaves, under decks and nearby trees and shrubbery. Be aware and watch for flight patterns into birdhouses, unused grills, RVs, boats, rockery, railroad tie retaining walls and even the ground.
Also watch for direct flight patterns into openings on the exterior of your home such as lighting fixtures, ventilation screens, wiring and plumbing voids and other small openings. Wasps can nest in wall voids, attics and crawlspaces. Pay special attention to any noises in your walls and ceilings ranging from very light scratching to ticking, humming or even buzzing. If you hear these sounds look at the adjacent exterior wall for a flight pattern.
Your Cascade technician will look for these conditions and notify you as part of your Cascade Inspect and Protect service.
