Be on the lookout for...

A winter rodent rebound. Rats and mice flourish in the summer and fall, eating a variety of foods such as many greens and seeds, blackberries, apples, bird seed and food scraps left from barbecues and picnics. So, with the summer plenty of food and warmth they breed abundantly, yet may be content to nest in hedges, rockeries, or wood piles. But when the rain becomes fairly constant, and the temperature drops, their shelter becomes compromised.

Some of their tunnels may become swamped. This is also the time that their outdoor food supply becomes limited. But rats, cunning as they are, realize the protection and food supply our warm homes represent. And they come in!

They can spend hours nosing along the foundation of your home, climbing up drain pipes and scouring roof eaves to find even the tiniest crack they can start gnawing until they gain entrance. Once inside, they use insulation for nesting material, set up a breeding ground, and begin multiplying. Rats can reproduce at the alarming rate of 8 - 10 young per litter, and average 5 - 6 litters per year. In one year, one pair of rats will produce 50 - 70 offspring, which literally can escalate to thousands of rodents in short order.
