Vitaflo Supports "Good Hope" for Friends in Malawi

Malawi is a small, former British colony in the middle of Africa with a population of about 11.6 million people. There is a long-time connection dating back to 1871 between Malawi and Scotland through the Scottish explorer David Livingston.

In Northern Malawi there are few roads for transporting, and Lake Malawi is the main highway. The residents had been using an old ship lifeboat as an ambulance, but after several years of use and breakdowns, the vessel needed constant attention.

The Raven Trust, a charity in Scotland became involved in many projects in Malawi and raised a petition to build a new marine ambulance. Vitaflo International donated the funds to purchase the materials, and the McDuff shipyard in Northern Scotland built the boat free of charge. Local fisherman and residents of McDuff contributed additional funding and material to complete the vessel. “Good Hope” was put into a container and shipped to Malawi where it is now on station, and it has proven to be a great benefit to the community.

The Good Hope is being used to ferry patients, staff, supplies and community residents down the lake to and from Tcharo and Zunga, two very remote villages that have no road access. The boat does well in all types of weather, and is greatly appreciated by all as it provides a life line service to remote communities throughout Malawi.
