Welcome to VitaFriends
Dear VitaFriend,
Happy Valentine's Day!
Did you know that February is American Heart Month? This is proclaimed each year by the President of the United States in an effort to help fight heart disease. Some of the best ways to prevent heart disease are through a balanced, healthy diet and regular physical activity. While Vitaflo can only encourage and cheer you on to daily exercise, we do provide some innovative products that contain DHA, which is known to have some heart-healthy benefits. Our entire range of great-tasting Cooler products contains pre-formed DHA, and we have two new products, KeyOmega and DocOmega, which include DHA and ARA as well. These can be used with our entire range of products for various metabolic disorders.
Also in this edition, is a heart-warming story on how Vitaflo International has helped some friends in Malawi, Africa by providing funds to support a marine ambulance for the local residents. Taste Connections contributor, Malathy Ramanujam has offered delicious recipes for Valentine cookies and brownies that will surely bring warmth and comfort to a cold winter day! Sharon Ernst, Chief Metabolic Dietitian at the University of Utah Metabolic Clinic has contributed an insightful article on dietary management of PKU and at home monitoring of blood Phenylalanine levels.

The Skinny on Fats DHA & ARA in Vitaflo Products!
Polyunsaturated fats (PUFA), particularly omega 3 fatty acids are known to be good, heart-healthy fats. Oily fish, such as salmon and tuna are the main sources of DHA in a regular diet. DHA is known to have many benefits, including heart health and even brain and eye development.
People with PKU and other related disorders of protein metabolism have a very restricted natural protein intake and can't consume high protein foods such as fish, meat, eggs and nuts, which are all rich sources of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. To learn how Vitaflo's products can help you get your recommended amounts of these important fatty acids, click here. |
Vitaflo Supports "Good Hope" for Friends in Malawi

Malawi is a small, former British colony in the middle of Africa with a population of about 11.6 million people. There is a long-time connection dating back to 1871 between Malawi and Scotland through the Scottish explorer David Livingston.
In Northern Malawi there are few roads for transporting, and Lake Malawi is the main highway. The residents had been using an old ship lifeboat as an ambulance, but after several years of use and breakdowns, the vessel needed constant attention. See how Vitaflo participated in the building of a new marine ambulance. Learn more. |

Dietitian's Corner - PKU Dietary Management & At Home Monitoring
Sharon L. Ernst, MPH, RD, CD
Chief Metabolic Dietitian, University of Utah Metabolic Clinic
Dietary treatment for certain inborn errors of metabolism like PKU require a restricted diet to maintain blood levels within a therapeutic range. Successful management of PKU is multifaceted and requires that patients and caregivers are familiar with the prescribed diet, can track phenylalanine intake, obtain periodic blood levels, monitor growth and have adequate financial resources. Several years ago a group of researchers in Utah surveyed patients and families following a low phenylalanine diet for PKU. Learn more.
