Meet a VitaFriend
 My name is Bharat Ramanujam. I am 28 years old and live with my parents in California. I was diagnosed at the age of 2 with a condition called Homocystinuria (similar to PKU), which is due to the absence of an enzyme, called Cystathionine ß Synthase. I have been on low-protein products and a supplemental methionine-free protein formula ever since diagnosis. When I was diagnosed I had seizures for which I have been taking medications which did not give good control. So I had to see so many Neurologists, who changed the medications that didn’t sometimes work. But recently, as I got older, I learned how to manage my seizures and medications.
For HCU, I take the special medical product HCU express that helps me maintain good metabolic levels. I use a green container, put HCU Express powder in it and take it with juice. Since the start of this year, I have been going to low protein cooking workshops with my mother around the country such as Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Columbia, Missouri. HCU Express comes in pre-measured small packets that are so much easier to carry and manage on my trips. HCU express packets have made my diet easier. I used to get sores in my mouth when I took other metabolic products because of artificial orange flavor. Now with HCU express, I don’t get the sores anymore.
Since my calcium levels were so low, I suffered from 4 fractures in the last 2 years. So I was started on Phosomax, Vitamin D supplement, and hopefully my levels should get better soon.
Even though I have this condition I think as though I don’t have the diet limitations. When I go out to eat or on my trips, I manage my levels by taking less protein items for about a couple of weeks to balance my diet and so my levels are within range. I am also planning on writing an Indian Vegetarian low-protein recipe book.
 I am a student at El Camino College and planning to transfer to a 4-year college soon in animal research or animal nutrition. I have taken classes in Computer Information Systems and a nutrition class last semester and passed it with an “A” grade.
I am working in the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park as a volunteer because of my passion with animals. I also do a lot of research on animals since I like to work at the zoo. I am working along with my mother on creating recipes and also in Taste Connections in creating new products. I have helped in creating product labels, logos and other computer related programs that help with the business, since I have taken classes in Computer Information Systems. I have also created websites www.hcusupport.com to bring the families with Homocystinuria together, and www.endangeredandrareanimals.com to help bring endangered animals awareness to the public. I am very passionate about my causes.
