I first met Erwin Gegenbauer many, many years ago through our friend, Kitty Keller. It was quite a memorable experience. Erwin is a man, that once you meet him, you never forget him. His intensity around vinegar is conveyed through the concentration in his eyes, especially when he describes each and every vinegar that he makes.

We have many vinegars presented to us every year. But, no presentation has ever matched the way Erwin presents his sours (vinegars). He might spritz a vinegar directly in your mouth. But, my favorite was when he pulled out a long micropipette from his sport coat pocket, drew a small amount of vinegar up into the tube, then instructed me to lift my tongue so he could drop a single drop of vinegar into my mouth - under my tongue. Then, with great enthusiasm, he described in detail the process and nuances of the vinegar I was tasting, the "family" from which it came, and why he likes it.

Once, I had the honor of trying a vinegar that I could only describe as "out-of-this-world." Upon tasting it we immediately asked what it was and when could we get it. The reply was, "Not yet, it is not up to where I want it to be." This experience exemplifies the quality that Erwin requires of all the vinegars that carry the Gegenbauer name - to a Noble T!


If I could, I would have one bottle of every vinegar we carry in my pantry at home... I really would. All have their own unique twist and flavor, and, although I don't have every variety, I have at least one of every producer at the ready. We are very pleased to once again carry the sours of Gegenbauer - after a long hiatus.

Ten years ago, in our old warehouse, Pamela Shelson Johns came to visit. She brought with her a number of artisan producers from Italy that she wrote about in her book, Italian Food Artisans: Recipes and Traditions. Included on the guest list was Gianluigi Peduzzi from famed pasta maker, Rusticella D'Abruzzo. It was a great treat to have such a wonderful artisan producer in our midst. We are pleased to carry his newly created corn and rice-based pastas. Beautiful pastas with a distinct, yet subtle flavor. Wonderful color to bring to any plate. And perhaps its best feature...it is gluten free!
