Pruneaux d-Agen Nature's Candies Prunes
Nature's Amazing Candies!

They conjure up a lot of bad stigma (unless you're older, and even then…). It’s almost as if you're caught eating prunes people assume that you're superior to them; as if you're stuck up.

But it’s not true! People who eat prunes are good, everyday people, just like you!

Pruneaux d’Agen (that’s French, "for the very best.") are not the shriveled up, dried up, tough skinned plums you envision. No, these prunes are nature's finest candy; naturally sweet, easy to chew and, of course, easy to digest!

First, you must start with the Ente plum, which is grown in the Aquitaine region of (SW) France. Next, the plum is slowly oven dried, concentrating the sweet flavor. And then they are steamed gently back to moistness! It is the hands of the artisan that defines one from another and why we love these the moist.

Our friend, Kitty, brings them in because she loves them. And we do too! So let's keep these prunes moving! Order up and eat ‘em. They are not just for the aged, they are for those that are young at heart! Eat for good health! Eat good food! Eat simply, Live well!

There are a zillion ways to cook and eat with these prunes. Try stuffing them with foie gras!

Order your plump luscious prunes here! On the new website!

Christmas Stollen with a Heart of Marzipan
Baby it's Cold Outside!
You have Stollen my heart with a heart of marzipan

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the stollen is so delightful,
And since we've no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn't show signs of stopping,
And I've bought some powder for topping,
The lights are turned way down low,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

When we finally take our first bite,
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really toast me right,
All the way home I'll be warm.

The fire is slowly dying,
And, my dear, there's still good-buying,
As long as UPS goes,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

On any given day ...
a (selfish) sad note

You come to rely on the things that have been around for as long as you can remember.

When it's something as reliable as your neighborhood butcher, and in this case a master butcher, you can get complacent about having the best possible food available to you anyway, anytime. (It’s a no-thinking, no doubt best on any given day).

In just a few short days, at the end of the month, A & J Meats will be closed.

For those of you who have had Rick's award-winning smoked turkey (NY TIMES Best in Country), Applewood Smoked Ham (Wine Spectator, best in country) and especially his amazing ribs (Food & Wine) and Applewood Smoked Bacon, you will be sad to know they will no longer be made with his secret recipes and "artisan touch".

Smoking is an art not a formula, and you have to know on any given day how the smoke will be and how each piece of meat will react.

So, I would say to you, as our local butcher closes, visit yours often, no matter how far away. Wholeheartedly support the artisan that makes food right. Because without them we will lose another piece of a very important puzzle that keeps us and the earth healthy. (A&J Meats has been selling "free" range, hormone-less, etc. for 40 years, long before it was fashionable).

And the next time you visit your local chain grocery or giant warehouse store, ask to speak to the master butcher. I'm pretty sure there might not even be a butcher in the store. The lines are blurred now as to what a butcher is, a "master butcher" is not just a title, but someone who has had training in whole animal butchery and years of experience.

We are shipping on Monday the last of the turkeys and hams just-in-time for Thanksgiving. (It will be a very sad day indeed.) Just a few are left. No requests or backorders.

We wish Rick and Julie all the best in retirement!
