Carnal Knowledge, Same Time Next Year, Hannah and Her Sisters, Moonstruck, The Untouchables, Midnight Run, Lethal Weapon II, Look Who's Talking, The Accountant... What do all these movies have in common?
They all have accountants... and the accountants all ate RJ's Soft Black Licorice at tax time!
Okay, not really. But they'd have been happier if they had. Because RJ's is simply the best licorice we've ever tasted. It's as different from those waxy Red Vines as a just-picked, sun-warmed garden tomato is from those pale impostors at the grocery store.
Just about every day, when customers stop by our store here in Seattle, we offer them a little licorice log (after they've tasted all the new California olive oils). They say, "Oh, I'm not really a big licorice fan." But they try it - and they're hooked. They buy a bag for their friend, for their mom, and of course, one to keep stashed in the glove compartment.
RJ's is licorice like it used to be. Nothing artificial, not sickly sweet - just real, licorice flavor and super-satisfying, chewy texture. (Disclaimer: If you really hate that anise flavor, this isn't for you. But, we bet you know someone who'd love it for a special little treat, though...mm-hmm. Thought so.)
As an added bonus, licorice has long been known for its stomach-soothing qualities.
And after doing taxes this year, a couple of extra bags might be just what you need.
Our after Tax Special for 2009 is 3 bags of RJ's Licorice for 15% off, or $15.27. Plus, with your newsletter coupon code for another 5% off makes for a whopping deal of $4.8355 per bag.

always Great to have Pantry items
We love just about everything made by Andrea of Acetaia San Giacomo. But Balsa Mela, or Apple Balsamic, is a particularly inspired creation; it's made from fresh apple must heated in the same way as traditional balsamic, then reduced and allowed to acidify. In addition to using it in familiar vinegar applications, Andrea suggests using it as a unique thirst quencher - just dilute with water and sip.
Put some in a squeeze bottle and dress a soup, a steak, or a plate of risotto.
Dark Muscovado Sugar - 2.8 Lb. Tub
We don't think of this sugar only as a brown sugar replacement, we really treat it as a condiment and an ingredient that adds more than just sweetness.
Muscovado is a soft, moist, fine brown sugar. It's also known as Barbados sugar, where it was once made. But ours comes from the Island of Mauritius, off the African coast. While most brown sugar these days is made by combining already-refined white sugar with molasses-like syrup, this is the real thing: a less refined product with rich, complex flavor.
Fig & Walnut Extra Jam as recommended by the NY TIMES
Don't let the jam name confuse you, this is a condiment extraordinaire, perfect for cheeses or your favorite cut of meat. So versatile it's worth having in the fridge.
Véronique makes her preserves according to traditional recipes. All her Casa di Castagna products are handmade in small batches. They have a minimum 55% fruit content - this qualifies them as "extra" preserves. Her preserves are prepared without additives or preservatives using carefully selected fresh fruits, free of any pesticide or chemical treatment. The outstanding quality and natural origin of these products is certified by a French Ministry of Agriculture accredited laboratory.
